---------------------------------------------------------------

The consultation period ended on 19th October 2007 and there was a public presentation of the findings by Prof Atun on 21st Nov 2007.

To give you an idea of the known responses opposing the prososals that were personally presented to the authorities.

Before the consultation period started, when the proposals were already known, the transfer of A & E, Maternity and Children's Services away from Chase Farm to Barnet and North Middlesex University Hospitals. There was a public outcry, with two marches of 5000 and 10,000 organised by the Save Chase Farm Group.

  • A petition of 30,000 was collected by Irene Wilson and friends. It was split to present 20,000 to the Prime Minister and 10,000 to Averil Dongworth Chielf Executive Officer of Chase Farm.
  • 14,000 Enfield Press protest coupon forms were presented to Averil Dongworth.
  • 3,000 letters from Broxbourne Residents were presented to Averil Dongworth.

This makes 47000 in total.

These were not acknowledged in the following Consultation where Scenario E for the retention and improvement of all the front line services at Chase Farm was withdrawn from the options, and we were presented with only two unacceptable alternatives from which to choose.

During the consultation the presentations to Prof Atun at Imperial College London

  • 2,600 letters and questionnaires were presented from The Save Chase Farm Group
  • 1,405 letters and petitions were presented by Irene Wilson
  • 9,000 petitions were presented by Nick de Bois

This makes 13,500 in total.

  • Another 16,243 petitions were presented by Broxbourne MP Charles Walker to No 10 Downing St, which has yet to be added to the final count.

76,248 Presentations in all without account of those sent in separately opposing the options.

We were told in Prof Atun's report that there was a great number of responses that didn't choose either option 1 or option 2, we clearly claim them as those opposing the options put forward.

Save Chase Farm is engaged in four types of activity:

1. RAISING AWARENESS
By distributing leaflets, campaigning in the local elections and raising the profile of the issue in the local and national press, we have ensured that the public are now fully aware of these alarming proposals.

2. MAKING YOUR VIEWS COUNT
The march of 5,000 people sent a clear message to the NHS managers. The 12,000+ Enfield voters who voted SAVE CHASE FARM in the May 4th council elections have also demonstrated the strength of public opinion on this issue. As a result, Enfield now has 2 SAVE CHASE FARM councillors, one of which sits on the Health Scrutiny Panel.

3. RESEARCHING THE FACTS
We do not believe that the proposals will stand up to detailed scrutiny. We are therefore engaged in independent research to fully understand the impact of the proposed A&E closure.

4. PROVIDING VIABLE ALTERNATIVES
We understand that the £31m black hole needs to be plugged. Save Chase Farm is therefore intent of putting more sensible options forward to allow the money to be saved while keeping A&E open.

If everyone stands up and shouts loudly enough, the NHS managers will not be able to close Accident and Emergency.
